A Mysterious Midnight Snack

This summer, during my return to São Paulo after a long and hectic period, I found myself in the midst of a strange and unsettling experience. Despite the bittersweet memories associated with my hometown, I was glad to be back in familiar surroundings.

One morning, I woke up in my own bed, greeted by Henrique, my cat, who was perched by the window. As I walked out to the living room, I was surprised to find my sister still awake, indulging in a late-night snack of rice crackers I had brought back from Japan. Concerned by her unusual behavior, I inquired, "tendo pensamentos profundos?" (are you thinking something deep?), as she typically maintained a healthier lifestyle.

My sister simply shook her head in response. I proceeded to the bathroom, and upon returning, found the living room plunged into darkness. There was no sign of my sister or the rice crackers she had been enjoying. "Tão derepente" (what a sudden), I gasped, bewildered by her sudden disappearance.

Returning to my room, I was greeted by Henrique playfully tackling me from above. "seu garoto travesso" (naughty boy), I chuckled, momentarily forgetting the strange encounter.

The following morning, as I prepared breakfast, I asked my sister if she had slept well. Her confused expression and explanation that she had just returned from her night shift sent chills down my spine. I was about to question her about the previous night's snacking when I realized the pack of rice crackers remained unopened.

This experience, while not overtly terrifying, left me deeply perplexed. The image of my sister enjoying the crackers, followed by her sudden vanishing and subsequent denial of the event, remains a puzzling mystery.
